Satay Beehon ... why no one in KL selling this????

I will always try to search for new foods whenever i am in Singapore. Those "new" foods that are not being offered in KL or Malaysia. Got the chance to savour Satay Beehoon which is pretty famous in Singapore, but i never seen it in KL. Sometimes i am wondering why as KL has many nice stalls selling satay but no one has the creative idea to start selling satay beehoon or noodles or whatever not....probably afraid of being called copycat...haha....

So this is the plate of satay beehoon that i tried during my previous trip to Singapore. With beehoon, taufoopok, taugeh, some meat strips, and full loads of satay gravy flooded in a rather small plate...cause i was just ordering a small plate at the price of SGD3.
I really like this very much. I am the person who like satay gravy, and i will normally indulge in cucumber sticks with satay gravy instead of the satay itself....Oh well, i just love the spiciness and the richful aroma of the satay gravy. Perhaps i need to visit Melaka soon for my satay celup bites!

This is the stall selling the satay beehoon @ Bugis food court. They normally sell it together with squid kangkung which we could find back home here...

Ok, am going to Singapore next weekend. Hooray!

Early Xmas + Food Hunt @ Singapore

Spent another amazing weekend in Singapore again..this time managed to hunt for more great foods and experienced the dazzling wonderful xmas lightup!! Let's start off with the glorious food hunt......
~~ Changi Airport ~~

I grab something for lunch before headed to city upon arrival in Changi. There's a food centre at Terminal 3 which serves a lot of local foods. Decided to have something light so i ordered this...
Fish sliced beehoon - SGD4.50
I expected something normal but it turned out to be great!
The soup was clear and very sweet by the time i first sipped on it...generous amount of fish slices and it's soft and fresh too....
Definitely a great place for some decent meal in airport....

~~ Citylink, City Hall MRT Station ~~
The Coffee Conneuisseur a.k.a TCC
Got some time to kill before dinner so grabbed my coffee at TCC
I know this cafe serves a variety of "artistic" coffee so decided to try it out...
Ordered a latte with azuki beans (ie red beans)..very good experience ... surprisingly azuki was blended well with the latte..creamy yet lovely ~~

~~ Chinatown = Niu Zhe Shui ~~

Special request to the special one - bring me to try the Frog Porridge...
So we went to Chinatown to try this famous delicacy...
Kung Po Frog - SGD 8 (only 1 frog in the claypot ehh...)
Braised tofu - SGD3.00. Plain porridge per bowl - SGD1.20. Fried "Tai Cheong" and Yaocharkwai - forgot the price.
The rule of eating this is to mix the Kungpo sauce with the porridge, and it has to be that way as the porridge was really plain and no taste...haha....
But this is a very nice combination i should say, although i mumbled that the SINGLE portion of frog was way too little....only got a few tiny morsels of it...
The other side dishes were very good as well...braised tofu was soft and flavorful, fried Taicheong was crispy and best eaten with the porridge too...

~~ Chinatown Food centre, Smith street ~~

This stall got a long q so i followed and try it...
Mix of yam cake+cheecheongfun - SGD2.00
This was good, coupled with the sweet and spicy sauce...something different with KL version
Fish slice porridge - SGD 3.00 - a bit letdown cos it tasted "fishy"....

Such a long q for this...SGD1.50
I like the way they mixed with the fried tiny anchovies and peanuts...very aromatic!
Glutinous rice was perfectly sticky too....

"Shui Kweh" - SGD1.00 for 4 pieces
Simple delicacy made from water and rice flour...eat it with the fried "choy pou" and chili....
Very savoury...i even mixed the choy pou with the fish porridge and it tasted better this way!

~~ Sim Lim Square Food Centre ~~

I readed some blogs and know that Sim Lim square apart from being a place selling IT stuff (something like our Low Yat Plaza), its food centre is famous for some local foods as well, such as this stall selling minced meat noodle....
What makes it special is the slice of abalone that they thrown in...that's why it's called Abalone Bak Chor Mee - SGD4.00 per bowl
I tried this with great expectations after seeing the long q and the articles pasted at the storefront, but ended up disappointed!
The noodles were so bland, seasoning was not my fave too....
I heard it's used to be a good one but maybe the quality has deteriorated...

~~ Selegie Road ~~

This is the very famous Taufoofah and soya bean in the island...
Taufoofah was smooth and it melted easily too...
Soya bean was ok as well....
They have a few branches in the island but not sure where exactly...

~~ MOS Burger @ Scotts Isetan ~~

Finally got my craving for MOS Burger answered...
Always heart their rice burger version and this time i ordered Unagi rice burger
As expected, moistful, juicy and delicious rice burger ever!

~~ Chinatown ~~

Had some desserts at night at Chinatown
Sago pomelo with mango - SGD3.50
Black sesame tongsui - SGD2.50
Bak Chang - SGD - 4.00
Everything was good i would say...the desserts were not too sweet, just the right sweetness that we liked it. The bakchang was aromatic with generous chunks of walnut, yellow bean and pork.

~~ Hong Lim Food Centre ~~

Queue again!!!!!

Queue for this!
Raisin cheese bun - SGD 1.30 per piece
Soft and irressitable...can't really stop after the 1st bite!

Tai Hwa's Minced meat noodles ie Mee Pok (or Bak chor mee??) is one of the most famous in Singapore, and it was really indeed a lot more different from the one that we tried at Sim Lim food centre...Just look at the few awards cert that they show in front of the stall...
Now i know the secret behind the Bak chor mee is the vinegar that they mixed in, never eat something like this other than Loh Mee. Noodles were QQ, ingredients were fresh (they only cooked the minced meat when orders made), soup was slurpingly delicious...
At SGD 5 for a big bowl version, we got extra home-made dumplings and meat balls which i liked very much!
A good and satisfying bowl of noodles before i departed from the island....
Ok, that's all about food. What is Xmas in Singapore without the Xmas tree and lightup?? Let's see their amazing decorations!

Margaret Drive Food Centre, Singapore

Been wanted to explore the nice eateries around Singapore, be it local foodcourt or restaurants in malls. This was the 2nd time i was at Margaret Drive Food Centre. Been requesting the special one to bring me there again after hearing from him that there are many nice and affordable foods such as beef noodles, shanghai dumplings, chicken rice, popiah, claypot chicken rice (which i tried before) and so on..... Oh well, i was in Singapore during my long holiday break last month and only able to blog about it now! Haha....

This is the stall selling the famous popiah
Simple setup, managed by husband and wife

SGD1.20 per piece
Not bad. Not too dry. I like the taste!
Popiah skin is soft and supple, generous amount of ingredients (same ingredients that you could find in our local version popiah)....

Xin Ji Chicken Rice stall

Situated at the 2nd floor of the food centre. Very well known among floggers in Singapore. The stall is a bit aging, but this "age" will definitely added on to the better taste of foods served...

I am not an avid fan of chicken rice and i normally do not order chicken rice when i eat out. I was at this food centre during last visit for the claypot chicken rice and saw many patrons ordering this chicken rice...and i thought, why not give it a try when i am in Singapore again?

The experience of having chicken rice here was indeed wonderful. We ordered half chicken with 2 plates of rice, and managed to wallop it to the last piece! This version of chicken rice has got its own "kick". The aroma of the rice, the juiciness of the flesh, the generous amount of chilli and ginger paste provided.... Wonderful!

By the way, i was surprised as they do serve black soya sauce (the thicker type) for chicken rice in Singapore, and was told that it should be mixed together with the chili..but i found thid combination weird!

Overall a very good plate of chicken rice which i would recommend. It reminds me of the hainanese style of chicken rice...

Weekend Getaway @ Singapore - Glorious Food Hunt!

Spent the last weekend in Singapore, and was brought around for nice foods! One thing that is special about Singapore is is has very unique food court/hawker centre which sells nice and affordable foods and beverages, cater mostly to HDB folks. Different hawker centre has its own famous specialties, and sometimes there are a few nice eateries under same roof....just couldn't have the big stomach to try all...keep the craving for next visit =)
Changi Village Hawker Centre

Started off with sugar cane juice + lemon - SGD1.20

More refreshing with the zest of lemon....

Mizzy's Corner Nasi Lemak
SGD4 (with otak-otak)
Everyone in Singapore seems to claim that the best nasi lemak in town is in Changi Village, and Mizzy Corner is 1 of the best.
Contrary to M'sia nasi lemak, this one does not have peanut accompanied. Nevertheless, it has the standard condiments like ikan bilis, cucumber, egg and the most important - sambal.
I like the sambal here, sweet and savoury, but still lack the level of spiciness that i love...tak cukup pedas!
The fried chicken was well marinated and very crispy too...
Rice wise, very fragrant and flavourful ~~~

Fried Chai Tau Kway 菜头粿
From 1 of the stall in the hawker centre
Very different way of cooking method for this carrot cake. Basically only eggs and 菜圃 added, and they like to mix with black soya sauce. A pretty amazing dish if you ask me, at least the taste is slightly different with Malaysia style which has more ingredients like taugeh....and enough "wok-hei"!

Took a stroll along the Changi beach. Apparently this is the best place to view airplane since it is very near to Changi airport....a very good place to hang out, dating and wondering at the plane if you are moody...haha....
Toa Payoh Lor 1 Hawker Centre

Tian Tian Lai Fried Hokkien Mee
Featured in many newspapers, mags and tv shows.
I think this is Singaporean's most favourite dish.

SGD 4
It didn't look appealing, but it smelled tempting!
Noodles were well fried, with rightful amount of "wetness" that has got it's oomph!
Strips of prawns and squids only served as garnishing. Expect to get pork lards here too! Probably this is why it tasted so good ehh?
A satisfying plate of hokkien mee, accompanied by the sambal belacan to complete this gastro delight ~~~
Now i feel the Tyhe Cheong Prawn Hokkien Mee in Pavilion is just ordinary.....haha....

Mr Bean
Got this around Toa Payoh MRT Station
With many types of filling, i chose peanut filling...
Very fluffy, best eaten while hot...
The pancake version that i love....

Margaret Drive Food Centre @ Mcpherson

Huge crowd at Level 2 of this food centre, with majority of it waiting anxiously for Tai Liok Claypot Chicken Rice. We waited for more than half hour for this claypot rice as they only start to cook from scratch when order is received....

Similar to M'sia, this eatery does sell double boiled soup too.
We ordered Old Cucumber soup and Chicken feet with peanut soup.
While the old cucumber soup was perfectly refreshing, the chicken feet soup was a bit thicker as the peanut was already boiled until very soft....

Waited so long for this....
We were given the oil and dark soya sauce to put by ourself according to our liking.
Honestly, i didn't see any specialty in this claypot rice. Although generous amount of chinese sausages were included, i felt it tasted a bit plain.
Probably been used to M'sia version that is cooked together with dark soya sauce....
Telok Blangah Food Centre near Harbourfront

Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia
Good food need queuing

SGD 3 (smallest plate is SGD2.50)
This wanton mee is translucent and really thin. A bit similar to Hong Kong version wanton mee, although not exactly the same.
Sauce was a bit oily to my liking, but it was hell very appetising, especially with the accompanied chili.
Charsiew was juicy and succulent enough, and was told that it was home-made using charcoal oven.
Wanton was a let down. Full of wanton skin with little mince. Probably the owner does not want to focus on this wanton la....
Had a short walk at this nearby Telok Blangah Hill Park, a hidden gem in Singapore i would say...
Looks like a reserve forest to me....

It has a connecting bridge linking the small hill from Telok Blangah Hill Park to another hill in the opposite.
It's an alternative place to go hang out at night too...can expect nice view of Singapore harbourfront...

Vivo City Harbourfront
I miss Pacific Coffee ever since i tried it in Hong Kong.
The coffee taste just suit to my liking...
When are they venturing into KL someday???

Had an early dinner at Han's before i catched my flight back to KL.
Heard that it is a Hainanese concept restaurant so being a hainanese myself has decided to give it a try...
But we were so disappointed....

We ordered Hainanese Pork Chop and Chicken Chop set
Served together with drinks, soup and fruits at SGD10.90 per set
We strictly felt that it does not worth the cent!

Chicken chop was just ordinary, nothing special. Given the price, i would expect a good bargain in getting a value-for-money steak at Aston.

Hainanese Pork Chop
More like a sweet & sour pork chop to me
The gravy did not look like the version that we used to see here eg at Yik Kee Dang Wangi.
The Pork Chop was re-fried (which we seen by ourself), which made it a bit hard to bite....
Were totally not satisfied.
Given many outlets that it has opened in Singapore, i do not understand why it has still attracted many patrons. Probably different outlet different quality....
By the way, their pastries look tempting. May try it next time though....
Oh well, when is the next Singapore food hunt? Anticipating ^_^
